ABSENCES:

Under the Education Act 1989, Part 3, Enrolment and Attendance of Students – children are required to attend school every day.
We request that parents phone the school when a child is going to be absent. Written notification is required if a child will be absent for reasons other than illness. This is important as we like to be aware of the welfare of children coming to school. You can also complete the online Absences Form on our Home page.

For occasional appointments such as the doctor or dentist, we appreciate notification through the school office or the classroom teacher.

LUNCHES:

It is part of our school policy to promote healthy eating habits. Please do not send sweets or chocolates to school and water is the recommended drink. Healthy snacks are encouraged.

STATIONERY:

Stationery can be purchased from any book shop and lists for each year group is on the website or at the office.

NEWSLETTER:

Informative newsletters are issued every Wednesday via email. Hardcopies can be picked up at the office.  Please make sure we have your current email address.
Notices for the publication should be sent to the office by noon Tuesday.

UNIFORM:

Hamilton West students wear a school uniform and these can be purchased from the office. School Office hours are 8 am to 4 pm during term time.

REPORTING TO PARENTS:

Hamilton West School is committed to informing parents/whanau of their child’s progress at school and this happens in a number of ways, both orally and in written forms (twice per year) as outlined below:

Charter Achievement Targets
Achievement Reports to the Board of Trustees
Informal teacher and parent/whanau meetings
Formal parent and teacher/whanau meetings requested by either party
Seesaw – Report and interview
Written Reports

LUCKY BOOK CLUB:

The opportunity to purchase books at reasonable prices is provided by Ashton Scholastics through the school. Several times a year children bring home order forms.
The school library benefits from our involvement with the book club.

SCHOOL BANKING:

School Banking is available through the school, anyone interested can ring the office Ph: 07 839 4911.

ESOL:

The school has a number of English Speakers of Other Language (ESOL) students who are well catered for at Hamilton West School. We have an expert ESOL teacher who works hard with the other teachers to meet the needs of these students. On enrolment, you will be asked about whether your child may fall into this category.

SUPERVISION OF CHILDREN:

Supervision of the students commences at 8:30 am in the classrooms.  Students need to be picked up or have left the grounds by 3:15 pm.
Teachers are on duty at morning intervals, lunchtime and at the end of the school day to ensure the safety and well-being of all children.
The road patrol is on duty at Hammond Street before and after school.

BIKES:

Children riding bikes to school must wear safety helmets. The Ministry of Transport and our school recommend that children over the age of 9 are responsible enough to be permitted to ride to school.

PARKING:

We have many entrances to our school. The best places for parents to park when transporting children to and from school are Fow Street, Horne Street, Hammond Street and Pembroke (by the lake) entrances.

HATS:

As part of an awareness of the harmful effects of the sun, children are to wear school uniform hats and use sunblock from Labour Weekend to Easter.

MEDICATION:

Parents requesting the school to administer medication to their children are required to complete a consent form at the office.

LOST PROPERTY:

Lost property is available for viewing in a storage cupboard. Please ask at the office for a key.  We strongly recommend that all clothing and footwear be clearly named.
