Hamilton West School

Kia ora and welcome to Hamilton West School. As a vibrant full primary school catering to 720 students from Year 1 to Year 8, we are proud to be the oldest school in Hamilton, dating back to the early settlement of our city. We strive to create a diverse and inclusive environment where our children feel a deep sense of identity, connection, and belonging. Our enthusiastic kaiako (teachers) are committed to providing quality learning opportunities, balancing a firm foundation in reading, writing, and mathematics with a rich, varied curriculum encompassing science, social science, technology, the arts, health and physical education, and te reo Māori. Together, we celebrate the outstanding academic, cultural, artistic, and sporting achievements of our tamariki (students).

At the heart of our school is our vision, Our Best Always – Kia Piki Taumata (“May you climb to the highest peaks”), which inspires every learner to reach for their personal summit. This vision is lived daily through our core values and a strong commitment to restorative relationships. 

We foster whanaungatanga by walking together to build positive, lasting connections between ākonga, staff, and whānau. Through ako, we share the educational journey as reciprocal partners, learning with and from one another. We practice manaakitanga by looking out for each other and maintaining a caring, respectful, and welcoming space where every learner feels valued. We empower our tamariki to demonstrate rangatiratanga by showing integrity and stepping up as leaders of their own learning paths. Finally, through kaitiakitanga, we act as active guardians of our physical, cultural, and digital environments, ensuring our space is safe, strong, and sustainable for all who follow.
